Sarah Kaufman Blogs About Her Upcoming Fight

The Strikeforce women’s welterweight champion Sarah Kaufman (12-0), a student of head-trainer Adam Zugec at ZUMA MMA , updated her personal blog today with thoughts about her upcoming fight in San Jose, California at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons II.

Her opponent will be Dutch Muay-Thai stylist and submissions specialist Marloes Coenen (17-4).

Excerpt:

If you haven’t heard much about Marloes, she is 17-4 (12submissions, 2 TKO’s), out of Amsterdam. Don’t let the submissions fool you, she is also known for her Thai boxing.

For me, I am really excited to be fighting again so soon. It should be a great fight, and will be interesting to see how Marloes feels after making her first cut to 135lbs. My goal is to always finish the fight – and this fight will be no different. Look forward to some exciting exchanges and maybe even a few surprises…but that belt HAS to come back to Canada with me

Steve Ramirez Likely For “Playboy Mansion Fights 7″ Main Event Against B.C.’s Nick Hinchliffe

It was previously announced by this site that Nanaimo, B.C.’s Nick Hinchliffe (15-6) will headline the MMA portion of Fight Night At The Playboy Mansion 7 on September, 11th. We have now received word that Nick’s opponent will almost certainly be California-based fighter Steve Ramirez (7-6, ABOVE LEFT).

      Picture Props: Sherdog.com

Ramirez has faced several notable fighters so far in his six-year career including current UFC Fighter and former WEC lightweight champion Gabe Ruediger (17-6). Ramirez has also tangled with three-time UFC veteran Gill Castillo (8-5), and noted submissions specialist and innovator Jason Von Flue (14-12).

All of Ramirez’ seven wins have come by way of decisive finish with a nearly even mix of (T)KO’s and submissions, including an astounding three-second KO of Darvin Wattree (2-3, ABOVE RIGHT) in July, 2009, that may just be the fastest KO in MMA history. At the same time, Ramirez has been finished himself in all but one of his six career losses.

This is an intriguing fight because a good performance for Nick Hinchliffe could help to put British Columbia’s thriving MMA scene on the map internationally and possibly lead to more stand-out B.C. fighters being asked to showcase their skills on major cards in the United States. In his last fight, Nick came up short in his bid to secure the Armageddon FC middleweight title, losing via first-round armbar to Kalib Starnes (11-5). Before that, Hinchliffe defeated Craig “Farmer” Brown (7-3) via third-round submission at Aggression MMA III in Vernon, B.C. last May.

Video: Mike Murphy Defeats Tate Hackert Via TKO at “Full Throttle Fight Night 2″

It was a brilliant performance by Powell River Jiu Jitsu‘s Mike Murphy at Full Throttle Fight Night 2, and now you can watch the fight for yourself– or watch it again, if you were there live.

In either case, look for the excellent judo throw that sets up the first take-down and note how Murphy keeps constant pressure on his opponent Tate Hackert who defends ably but never seems to gain much positive momentum.

Marloes Coenen Expects “Explosive Fight” With B.C.’s Sarah Kaufman

On October, 9th in San Jose, California, Victoria, B.C.’s own Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight Champion, Sarah Kaufman (12-0), will finally be granted her request for a spot on a main card at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons II.

It won’t be a rematch against recent 135lb. tournament champion Meisha Tate (11-2), but a title fight against Holland’s Marloes Coenen (17-4).

Coenen, a well-rounded fighter who is best known in North America for her third-round TKO loss to Cristiane Santos (10-1) at Strikeforce: Miami this January, commented about the fight to Derek Bolander of BleacherReport.com.

      Excerpt:

Derek Bolender: You and Kaufman have a common opponent in Roxanne Modafferi. Kaufman beat her in her last fight. What did you learn about Kaufman from watching the fight?

Marloes Coenen: I saw that fight briefly, to be honest. We will analyze her in the coming period. I have to say that I loved her knockout. Roxanne is a nice girl, but what a beautiful ending it was.

Derek Bolender: If I had to guess I would say that Kaufman does not want to mess around with your submission skills on the ground. I think she will try to turn this into a kickboxing match and stick and move and try to bully you around in the clinch. How do you envision the fight playing out in your head?

Marloes Coenen: I don’t care what she wants. I play my game. If she wants to clinch I’m fine with that. I like clinching. After the Cyborg fight I think that I have proven to be able to take a punch.

Derek Bolender: Can you give me a prediction? Will you win by knockout, submission, or by a decision?

Marloes Coenen: I think that Sarah and I are both fierce so it will be an explosive fight.

AFC4 Main Event Revealed: Robert Drysdale vs. Clay Davidson

It was already reported that 2005 World Jiu Jitsu Champion and 2007 ADCC Absolute Champion Robert Drysdale (1-0) would headline Armageddon Fighting Championships 4 on November, 6th. Now it has been confirmed for this site that Drysdale’s opponent in Colwood, B.C. will be none other than Clay Davidson (5-1, Pictured) of Kelowna, B.C.’s Team Toshido.

Davidson is arguably the best light heavyweight in British Columbia and is currently riding a five-fight winning streak, all by way of submission in the first round. His most recent win came at Aggression MMA III: Trilogy in Vernon, B.C. this past May, where Clay defeated Devon Neis (3-2) via kimura midway through the opening round. Clay’s only loss came in his professional debut at MFC13 against rising star Dwayne Lewis (11-5).

After making short work of natural middleweight Bastien Huveneers (8-3-1) at AFC3, Robert Drysdale will follow his mma debut by taking a step-up in competition to face a physically larger, and arguably more threatening, prospect in Clay Davidson. While there’s no doubt that Drysdale will be looked at as a prohibitive favourite, Davidson is a skilled grappler in his own right, which should allow him to at least avoid being submitted early. He will likely look to test Drysdale’s endurance and stand-up.

This will be the first main event slot either fighter has appeared in as a professional MMA fighter.

Full-Throttle Fight Night — Full Review

A Night Of Great Fights In The Great Outdoors

The second annual Full Throttle Fight Night in Cumberland, B.C. was a well-executed event that left fans already looking for tickets to next year’s show. The unique natural setting was the perfect backdrop for dynamic young fighters to showcase their skills in front of.

[Picture: MFC Fighter Kajan Johnson with teammate/student Jamie Siraj]

Unfortunately, the main card fights were negatively impacted by plummeting air temperatures and rapidly accumulating condensation on the canvas. In fact, both main event fighters suffered slips due to the the slick fighting surface.

That was a shame because the setting would have been perfect for watching outdoor fights had they started even an hour earlier, or been staged in July, which has much longer days. That said, there may have been considerations that prevented organizers from addressing this issue.

In any case, the night was most notable, from our perspective, for the numerous fantastic amateur MMA fights it included.

      UFC 118 Results

Both main card lightweight fights ended in upsets as Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard ushered in a new era for the division in the UFC. Their upcoming rematch offers the winner a chance to firmly entrench himself as the best lightweight in the world.

In the co-main event, Randy Couture dug deep into his bag of tricks and found the ankle-pick take-down. It worked like a charm against the upright and unprepared James Toney. Once the fight entered in “The Natural’s” world, he quickly turned the lights out on “Lights Out” via arm-triangle.

Is it just me, or has Couture looked essentially the same in the ring, athletically at least, for over thirteen years?

Now imagine if Randy could have debuted in the UFC in his twenties rather than at nearly thirty-four years old.
